Australia’s parliaments should reflect the diverse population they represent, yet the current political environment often favours those with extensive personal support networks or those willing to sacrifice work-life balance for the demands of the job. This reality excludes many talented individuals, particularly parents and those with caregiving responsibilities, from serving in public office.
We call on the Australian government to implement reforms that make political careers more accessible and sustainable for people from all walks of life, including those who prioritise family and personal wellbeing. This includes measures such as flexible working arrangements for MPs, job-sharing, better support for those with caregiving responsibilities, and policies that promote a more inclusive and diverse parliamentary environment.
